Dangote Threatened Over Recruitment of Workers from the North to Lagos
The Lagos branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on a strike over allegations against the Dangote Refinery for bringing in 89 youths from Katsina State without following due process. Reports revealed that a video circulating on social media showed the youths disembarking from a vehicle in front of a company near the Dangote Refinery.
According to Daily Trust, the Lagos State Police Command stated that the youths were employed legally, but the NLC insisted that their arrival posed a security threat and violated labor regulations.
The Lagos State NLC Chairperson, Funmi Sessi, said the action taken by the Dangote Refinery contravened labor laws and established procedures. She stated:
“The labor law clearly states that at least 70% of unskilled workers must come from the area where the job is located. But here is Dangote bringing in youths from Katsina, even though there are unemployed youths in Lagos.”
She added that there was no special skill those youths from the North possessed that local youths in Lagos lacked.
The Chairperson further emphasized that what Dangote did would not be tolerated, as it infringed on the rights of local residents.
Comrade Sessi declared that the NLC would not sit back and watch Dangote trample on workers' rights without taking action. She called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Federal Ministry of Labor to intervene urgently. She said:
“This is not the first time Dangote is doing this. He frequently brings in Indians and other foreigners to do jobs that Nigerians can do.”
She added that the NLC was preparing to take nationwide action if Dangote failed to relocate the youths from Katsina to one of his companies in Northern Nigeria.
It was also reported that the Dangote Group has opened its doors to offer temporary jobs to Nigerian youths. According to the company, the youths would be trained specifically for a limited period. It was stated that any Nigerian youth applying for the job must have completed a university degree or equivalent.
