Maiduguri, Nigeria — The Kanuri community in Akure and beyond has been thrown into mourning following the death of its leader, Malam Muhammed Aja, popularly known as the Sarkin Barebari of Akure.
Malam Aja passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, in Maiduguri, Borno State, after a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of an era for the Kanuri people residing in Akure, Ondo State, where he served as a respected traditional and community leader.
As Sarkin Barebari, Malam Aja played a significant role in fostering unity among Kanuri indigenes living outside their ancestral homeland. He was widely regarded for his leadership, wisdom, and dedication to preserving cultural heritage while promoting peaceful coexistence within the larger community.
