Police arrest 18-year-old girl while hawking, force her to admit being an armed robber

A Nigerian lawyer has shared a disturbing account of an 18-year-old girl who has been in prison for months after being forced by the police to confess to armed robbery.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the lawyer revealed that he had visited a correctional facility to interview an inmate but ended up speaking with several others who lacked legal representation.

Among them was the young girl, whom he identified as EUO.

According to his findings, the girl was arrested in August 2024 while hawking agidi. She was detained alongside three men aged 45 to 49, all accused of armed robbery.

The police allegedly tortured her until she confessed to being an armed robber and carrying a firearm.

Detailing her ordeal, the lawyer wrote:

“I was meant to re-interview just one person, but during my visit, the Officer in Charge commended my efforts to decongest the custodial center and referred several inmates without legal representation to me.”

“One of them was an 18-year-old girl whose father died when she was a child. She lives with her grandmother and hawks agidi for survival. She was accused of armed robbery and arrested alongside three older men.”

“The police tortured her into confessing by hanging her upside down, burning her with a lighter in sensitive areas, and subjecting her to unbearable pain until she could no longer endure it.”

The lawyer further disclosed that one of the co-accused, who persistently denied involvement in the crime, died due to the torture he endured at the police station.

He also revealed that the police demanded ₦150,000 for the girl’s bail, which she could not afford, leading to her continued detention.

Shockingly, her family remains unaware of her whereabouts, as the police allegedly prevented her from contacting them.

“Her family does not know where she is. As I make this tweet, she remains in detention. I will be representing her pro bono,” the lawyer concluded.

Following his post, concerned individuals flooded the comment section, expressing outrage and calling for justice.
