Fire Guts ‘Nameless Lodge’ in Gwallameji, Properties Destroyed
Residents try to put off the fire
A late-night fire outbreak on Monday ravaged a residential lodge known as Nameless Lodge, located behind Gwallameji Primary School in the Gwallameji area of Bauchi. While no lives were lost, several properties and personal belongings were completely destroyed before emergency responders arrived.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started at about 6:45 p.m., sending residents of the lodge and neighboring buildings into a panic as thick smoke and flames engulfed the compound. The cause of the fire remains unknown as of the time of filing this report.
Efforts by bystanders to contain the blaze proved futile, and it took some time before the fire service arrived at the scene. By then, most of the rooms in the building had been gutted, leaving the occupants devastated and without shelter.
"We tried using water and omo (detergents) to quench the fire before the fire service came, but the flames were too much. Almost everything in the lodge was destroyed," said Maleek Jaydeen, a student and resident of the area.
Though the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, eyewitnesses say valuables including mattresses, electronics, academic documents, and a popular kiosk in the building (mummy Favour shop) were lost in the disaster.
Officials of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Fire Service were not immediately available for comment, but residents are calling on the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure quicker response times in future emergencies.
The affected lodge, commonly inhabited by students of nearby tertiary institutions, has left many stranded and in need of immediate assistance.
