BREAKING: CBN Extends Deadline For Old Naira Notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria has finally extended the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes by 10 days.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, said the new deadline is February 10, 2023.

This comes as President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) had earlier reiterated his position that there was no going back on the naira redesign project and ruled out the extension of the January 31 deadline for the old N1,000, N500 and N200 to cease from being legal tender.

The President’s position was also supported by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which insisted that the deadline would not be extended.

With this new extension, Nigerians now have until February 10, 2023, to exchange their old notes for the new currency.

Reps Threaten To Issue Arrest Warrant On Emefiele, Bank Chiefs

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest on the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele and some bank directors over their collective refusal to honour an invite by the green chamber over scarcity of three newly designed naira notes.

The House had summoned the CBN governor and bank directors over the January 31, 2023 deadline for the validity of old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes but the bank chiefs refused to heed the invitation by the green chamber.

Gbajabiamila, in a statement on Thursday, said the bank chiefs, by shunning the invitation of the House, insulted the authority and prerogatives of the people’s parliament. “This is unacceptable,” he said

unacceptable,” he said.

Although the Speaker, in his statement on Thursday, said the warrant to be issued would be against the CBN and bank directors but did not expressly mentioned Emefiele, the House had at different times in the last two months summoned the CBN governor over the naira redesign but the invitation was not honoured.

The House had invited Emefiele and the bank directors to give reasons for the ongoing failure to adequately disburse the redesigned naira notes before the expiration of the January 31, 2023.

The House further constituted an ad-hoc committee led by the Majority Leader of the House, Alhassan Ado Doguwa over the matter.

The Speaker said, “The Resolution of the House was predicated on information showing that the rollout of the redesigned naira notes has been an unmitigated failure. This failure has real and dire consequences on the ability of Nigerians to conduct business across the country.

“The refusal by the CBN to heed the invitation by the House of Representatives is evidence of a blatant disregard for the well-being of the Nigerian people who are their customers. It is also an insult to the authority and prerogatives of the people’s parliament.

“Therefore, I will, pursuant to the authority conferred by Section 89 (1)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Order 19 (2)(1) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives, not hesitate to issue a warrant to the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force to compel the attendance of the CBN or Managing Directors who fail, refuse or neglect to respond to the summons by the House of Representatives.”

He noted that the House recognised the CBN authority to determine the country’s legal tender and to recall currency with reasonable notice, subject to the approval of the President.

“The House is also aware that Section 20 (3) Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act mandates the CBN to redeem the face value of the recalled currency upon demand, even after the expiration of the notice of recall.

“Notwithstanding the deadline imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), this House will see to it that this provision of the law is honoured in full.”

The CBN on October 26, 2022 had announced its plan to redesign the three banknotes. President Muhammadu Buhari subsequently unveiled the redesigned N200, N500 and N1,000 notes on November 23, 2022, while the apex bank fixed January 31 deadline for the validity of the old notes.

The CBN also pegged its weekly cash withdrawal limits to N500,000 for individuals and N5m for corporate firms.

Kuda Bank has announced that it has obtained a license from the Pakistani central bank

Kuda Bank has obtained a License from the Pakistani apex bank, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to operate a digital bank in the country.

The license was given to the Nigerian neobank on Friday, January 13, 2023. It will operate under the name KT Bank and is one of the five banks to obtain a license from the Pakistani apex bank.

SBP launched a national financial inclusion policy to boost the number of financially literate Pakistanis to 50 per cent of the country’s bankable population by 2020.

The goal fell through with just an abysmal 21 per cent of Pakistanis brought into the bankable dragnet. Also, SBP made moves to narrow the gender gap in its financially included Pakistani women as 36 per cent of the male adults in the country are in the financial system compared to 7 per cent of women.

However, smartphone and internet access have increased. In 2022, the country’s telecoms regulator, the Pakistani Telecommunications Authority reported that smartphone users of about 52 per cent now outnumber 2G-enabled phones by 48 per cent for the first time.

Broadband subscribers in the country have exceeded 100 million in 2021, while active mobile wallets have spiked from 26.7 million in 2020 to 46 million in 2021.

A report said based on this, the country’s central bank introduced a new regulatory and licensing policy for the Asian country in January 2022 and received 20 applications by March of the same year. It has now licensed five banks, including Kuda Bank which is expected to incorporate a limited company with the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission.

In-principle approval is anticipated to be given after which the newly licensed banks can begin operation in the country. Kuda announced in November 2022 that it was starting operations in the United Kingdom, where a high percentage of Africans reside and providing them with local transfers and direct debits. The bank's founder and CEO, Babs Ogudeyi said the bank was building a one-stop-shop for Africans with the United Kingdom as one the first of its outing outside Africa.

A source reported that for the most part, Kuda Bank is branchless. Meaning it has no physical structures, nowhere to physically go and lay complaints if anything goes amiss.

But it has not deterred Nigerians, especially the youths from operating an account with it.

As of the last count, the bank has amassed over 1.4 million customers since it came on stream in 2017, five years ago.

“Goat people have no place in the kingdom of God” – Mike Bamiloye

Popular clergyman and movie producer, Mike Bamiloye, has called out people who refer to themselves as a GOAT (greatest of all time)

Taking to his Instagram page, he shared a lengthy piece talking about the biblical meaning of a goat and how the devil was using it to deceive people.

According to him, a goat was disobedient and stubborn and such people did not belong in the kingdom.

In his words;

“BRO REUBEN, ARE YOU A GOAT?
Bro Rueben!
Because you are so gifted in Music.
Because you have been so blessed with compositions of Healing Music.
Because you are sought by many people.
Because you are now so famous and widely known everywhere!
YOU NOW CALL YOURSELF A “GOAT”
A GOAT?
In the Bible, the GOAT is a symbol of the Stubborn, Headstrong, disobedient and Unbelieving people.
While the SHEEP symbolizes the Godly, Believing Children of God!
That is why Jesus said He will separate the SHEEP from the GOAT and cast the stubborn unbelieving People away from Him into everlasting Fire.

NOW, because the Music of Bro Reuben has become so popular and he is now been invited from place to place,
HE SAID HE IS NOW A GOAT!
I said Ah! Bro Reuben!
Because you are now a GOAT,
Is that why you now change your name to Rubby Kumba?
Your streaming strength has now grown to 1.2m streams and you are now beginning to to put Colors on your hair small small!
Last month,
It was a small yellow spot on your head above your left ear.
But this week,
The left side of your head has a small spot colored with red!
IS THIS HOW GOATS BEHAVE?

I said, Ah! Brother Reuben,
What is the Meaning of GOAT?
You said, Ah, GOAT has a good meaning!
You said, it means:
“GREATEST OF ALL TIME”
And I said,
No! It is the Devil that has changed the meaning for you!
It means Stubborn, Unbelieving and unrepentant, headstrong fellow.

Bro Rueben,
Dont you see that the Spirit of the GOAT is already possessing you?
You that was very humble and respectful in the Church, and God was helping you gradually to establish your ministry,
Now, you are beginning to leave your hair without combing it.
You are beginning to walk like a limping man.
You are beginning to walk with your shoulders raised up like the PrayingMantis arms.
Your jean trousers is beginning to tear small small.
BRO REUBEN!
You are not a GOAT!
YOU ARE A SHEEP of GOD!
You are not the Greatest of ALL Times,
THEY ARE LYING TO YOU!
A Goat People has no place in the Kingdom of God!
NOW LISTEN! Bro Reuben!
MAYBE GOAT HAS MORE HIDDEN DANGEROUS MEANING THAT WHAT THEY CALL IT TO YOU!”
